Review:
The Omnivore's Dilemma is an exploration into the foods that are on our plates and why. The answers he delivers are at times frightening.
Whenever I read a book like this, I believe more and more that the food industry has set aside our own individual nutrition needs for a larger paycheck. What's frightening is that we have little say over what is sold in our grocery stores.
Breaking down the corn industry, Pollan gives us an insider look at what our beef is being fed, how the processing of feed corn leads to hundreds of other food products, and of course how much of it we actually eat in a given day. (It's much more than you can believe!)
After exposing the industrial corn conglomerate, Pollan then talks about the organic industry and how they've become industrialized as well, which is not good news for those who swear by organically grown foods and still buy them in the supermarket.
Finally, to "solve" the omnivore's dilemma, he goes out and tries to make his own meal by hunting, scavenging, and using almanac-type knowledge to put a meal on his plate, which truly is an amusing and intriguing ending to a powerful and poignant book.
This is a must read for anyone who cares about what they're putting in their body... which should be all of you! This book is definitely on my "A" list!
